Composing and Decomposing Numbers

We learned how to compose and decompose numbers! Compose means to create a larger set from smaller parts. Decompose means breaking a larger set into smaller parts. The students used place value blocks, pictures, and numbers to represent the same number several different ways. For instance, 73 could be decomposed into 70+3, 10+10+10+10+10+10+10+1+1+1, or even 73 ones. The list goes on and on. Ask your child if they can tell you the definition of compose or decompose, or give you an example. You can even give them a number and have them decompose it as many ways as they can. It's great practice. I hope you all are enjoying the long weekend!
