First, 6 students were assigned random numbers. They had to order themselves from least to greatest. The rest of the class had to agree/disagree with their order. We also had a conversation about what made some numbers greater than others.
Next, each student was given a random card with a number to the ten thousands place. We walked in a circle and danced to music. Once the music stopped, the students had to partner with person directly across from them. On whiteboards they compared their numbers. Example: 24,758<24,986. They also had to circle the place value that made 24,758 less than 24,986. In this case, it would be the hundreds place.
We partnered about 3-4 times. The last round, two students came up to share their comparison and justify their comparison. The class agreed/disagreed with their explanations.
After we shared, I gave each student a random puzzle piece. Each piece represented a number in a different way such as word form, standard form, on a number line, etc. The students had to search the room to find their matches to their puzzle pieces.
To close our lesson, the students completed a 5 question assessment reviewing the place value skills from our lesson. It was so much fun getting to move around the room, dance, refresh our memories about place value, and engage in math!
